1:47 – HOW DO WE BECOME CHRISTIAN DISCIPLES? Faith in Jesus to become a child of God (John 1:12). Jesus expects total commitment. Become more like Jesus (Romans 8:28-29). Take up “cross” (Matthew 10:38).
2:48 – WHAT DOES BEING A CHRISTIAN DISCIPLE PRACTICALLY LOOK LIKE? Worship God alone. Attract non-Christians because of your integrity (Matthew 5:13-16). Beyond “lifestyle evangelism” to sharing the gospel with others (Mark 8:38).
5:27 – WHAT TOOLS DO WE HAVE? 1. RELYING ON THE HOLY SPIRIT – allow us to overcome sinful habits and follow God’s Word (Romans 8:13). 2. SCRIPTURE – draws us closer to Lord. 3. PRAYER – Can pray Scripture (Psalms, New Testament prayers). 4. CHURCH FELLOWSHIP – provides opportunities to be discipled by more mature believers.
6:44 – SO WHAT? Jesus calls Christians to live differently than surrounding culture. Thomas À Kempis, The Imitation of Christ: “Jesus always has many who love His heavenly kingdom, but few who bear his cross.” Saint Augustine: A Christian disciple is: “A mind through which Christ thinks. A heart through which Christ loves. A voice through which Christ speaks. A hand through which Christ helps.”
