Binmin Podcast Ep. 37: Different Types of Sermon Styles | Why Go To Church?

Discipleship
Released: April 15, 2022
13 mins 46 sec

You can’t miss the sermon at your church. But are there different types of sermons? And how do they affect us differently?

Show Notes:

0:00 – INTRO

0:55 – WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO CRAFT A SERMON?
A pastor has to “preach the word” (2 Tim. 4:2)
3 most common types:
1. EXPOSITORY PREACHING (EXPOSITIONAL)
2. TEXTUAL PREACHING
3. TOPICAL PREACHING

1:46 – 1. EXPOSITORY PREACHING
Seeks to “expose” the meaning of the Bible passage.
Explains an entire book of the Bible: verse by verse, chapter by chapter in its historical and literal contexts.

2:29 – WHAT GOES INTO CREATING AN EXPOSITORY SERMON?
CIA method for Biblical interpretation (See episodes 1a & 1b)
CONTEXT: literary, historical
INTERPRETATION: God’s originally intended meaning
APPLICATION: Apply it to us today

3:33 – WHY IS EXPOSITORY PREACHING SO POPULAR?
Shows us how to study and interpret the Bible for ourselves. Can follow the sermons each week rather than jumping around the Bible. Requires the pastor to deal with challenging texts and issues

5:23 – 2. TEXTUAL PREACHING
Like expository, except the pastor only preaches through a section rather than the entire book (4-8 week “sermon series”)

6:28 – WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A TEXTUAL SERMON SERIES?
Can help us in the Christian calendar: like Advent/Christmas or Easter. Can give a basic theological framework through an important section/story

7:28 – 3. TOPICAL PREACHING
A single message on a single subject. Gives a broad-spectrum view of what the Bible says on a given topic or theme.

8:05 – ADVANTAGES OF TOPICAL SERMONS
Can see a theme or topic through multiple books of the Bible. Helpful on special occasions (Mother’s Day) or to address needed issues

9:24 – DISADVANTAGES OF TOPICAL SERMONS
Could be biblically shallow. Pastor could select only Bible verses that support the theme but miss others

10:49 – SO WHAT?
All 3 types of sermons are beneficial. Expositional & Textual sermons are great for studying the Bible verse-by-verse. Topical sermons can be excellent sources of learning about one topic and getting a wide view

11:46 – WHAT’S YOUR NEXT STEP? FIND OUT THE STYLE: Take notes at church and see if you can tell the sermon’s style.

12:44 – THANK YOU & WRAP UP
