List of 33 Accountability Questions for Christians

We’re all accountable to God. But we shouldn’t wait until judgment day to have accountability in our lives!

Instead, Christians have the opportunity to regularly share honestly about their struggles (confession) and also restore one another with gospel promises from God. Sin hides in the darkness. Bringing it to the light with accountability brings healing (James 5:16). Here are thirty-three questions that you can ask others whom you meet with formally or informally for accountability.

We’re all accountable to God. But we shouldn't wait until judgment day to have accountability in our lives!

Questions about Spiritual Life

  • What are you thankful to God for this week?
  • How satisfied are you feeling in your relationship with God this week?
  • How has your personal time with God gone this week (solitude, silence, prayer, Scripture reading)?
  • What (and who) have you been praying for?
  • What Scriptures have you been reading recently, and how is God speaking to you through them? (What are you learning theologically or practically?)
  • Where is God speaking to you in an area that you find difficult to listen or act?
  • What is your number one prayer request for next week?

Sex, Entertainment, Emotions, Body

  • Have you viewed sexually explicit material or had any sinful sexual experience with a person since we last met?
  • Have you used entertainment (internet, shows, social media, video games) too much or inappropriately this week? How can you balance this better?
  • Are you giving your emotions too much free reign in your life? How can you stabilize yourself in God’s presence and truth?
  • Where are you giving yourself too much emotionally to another person (dependence, desire, lust, fear, anxiety)? How can you instead give yourself to God’s care?
  • How have you perceived your body and stewarded it for God this week (contentment, diet, exercise, enjoyment, thankfulness, self-control)?

Questions about Relationships

  • In what ways have you served others recently (roommates, friends, people with needs, coworkers, etc.)?
  • Are there ways you know you need to serve someone in your life better?
  • Who are you feeling burdened for right now? Why? Is there something God wants you to do in that relationship?

Confession & Repentance

  • Where is your struggle right now (sin, suffering, temptation)?
  • What do you need to confess from this past week before God and others/me?
  • What led to this sin (your temptations, triggers, relationships, context)?
  • What is a “lie” you’re tempted to believe when you are tempted? What is God’s truth about it?
  • Have you used your financial resources this past week to glorify God?
  • Are you walking in purity (of mind, body, and heart) before the Lord? If not, what did that impurity look like?
  • How has your communication with others and use of words been (anger, gossip, complaining, etc.)?
  • What is one goal that will help you to grow this week? Can I ask you about it later?
  • Have you answered these questions truthfully?

Dating Specific Questions:

  • How are you serving and honoring the person(s) you’re pursuing in dating? Where could you improve at this?
  • Is the man (/you) initiating honorable leadership in the relationship? What can you do to encourage that (/improve)?
  • Are you keeping pure boundaries for physical intimacy? Where are you crossing (or tempted to cross) those boundaries?
  • How are you integrating your spiritual lives into this relationship (conversations, praying together, church worship, etc.)?
  • Where is your level of emotional connectedness right now? Is it too little, too much? How do you need to adjust (share more, slow down)?
  • Are you seeking intimacy with God first before intimacy with this person? What does that look like in your life right now?
  • Are there others in your lives who can see what’s going on in this relationship and have permission to speak into it?
  • How are you doing at praying with and for each other?
  • Where are you guys struggling in the relationship? What does God want you to do about that? How can I help?

As we leverage honest questions in one another’s lives for accountability, we can then offer each other God’s grace and encouragement to follow Jesus more faithfully. And we can lay down our needs before God and invite him to forgive, restore, empower and heal us.
